We’ve established that Jameis Winston is awesome, but his wide receiver corps keeps taking hits: Jimbo Fisher announced Wednesday that Jarred “Scooter” Haggins will miss the season with a stress fracture in his knee, the fourth receiver expected to be a contributing factor in who has dropped out of the team’s plans since the end of last season.

Florida State has lost four wide receivers and three tight ends since the end of last year. Time for Jimbo Fisher to bust out the bubble wrap to preserve the rest.

Haggins, a senior, has had a spotty career. A three-star recruit in 2010, the high school quarterback earned playing time right away on special teams and as a slot receiver, but only managed one catch as a true freshman. He followed that up with 11 catches in 2011, but saw that number drop to just eight -- tenth on the team -- last year as he was plagued with hand injuries. He had a knee injury in spring ball, although it’s not clear that it’s related to his current issues. Haggins will likely redshirt and play as a fifth-year senior in 2014.
Last week, senior Willie Haulstead was removed from the team due to academic ineligibility, although Tomahawk Nation connected the dots to his career-long concussion issues. In June, senior Greg Dent was suspended indefinitely from the team after being accused in an extremely ugly sexual assault case. Speedster Marvin Bracy, a four-star recruit who redshirted in 2012, quit the team in May to pursue a career in track. The team has also lost tight ends Christo Kourtzidis, who announced his transfer in July, Kevin Hapley, who tore his ACL, and Jeremy Kerr, whose knee injury will need surgery. (Somehow, Nick O’Leary is now the only healthy tight end, despite slamming into a dang Lexus while riding a motorcycle.)
Although three of the team’s top four receivers from last year -- Rashad Greene, Kenny Shaw, and Kelvin Benjamin -- are still in the fold, there’s practically no depth with all the injuries. If Winston is to have a successful season as a redshirt freshman, the Noles’ top guys will really have to step up, as will some younger players who weren’t expected to contribute.
