Camellia Bowl name of Montgomery, Alabama’s new bowl game

The state of Alabama is getting a third bowl game.

US PRESSWIRE

Update: We now know the name of the new bowl. Via an ESPN release:

ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN, announced the creation of the Camellia Bowl, a postseason college football game matching-up the Sun Belt Conference against the Mid-American Conference (MAC) beginning in December 2014. The game will be played yearly at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., before the Christmas holiday and be televised nationally on ESPN or ESPN2.

The Camellia is the state flower of Alabama! The new game joins the Poinsettia Bowl and Rose Bowl as college football's most florid postseason affairs.

A new bowl game is coming to Montgomery, Ala., according to a report from Jon Solomon of al.com. The game, which will be played at the Cramton Bowl, will feature teams from the Sun Belt and Mid-American Conferences. The inaugural game will be played in 2014.

Montgomery has for some time been lobbying for its own bowl game, and this news confirms much of what was reported by SB Nation in June. At the time, Alabama State’s new stadium was part of the plans for the host site, but that did not materialize. The Cramton Bowl, which recently underwent renovations, has a capacity of approximately 25,000.

This is the third postseason contest that will be held in the state of Alabama; there are also bowl games in Birmingham and Mobile.

Montgomery is one of a bunch of different cities that’s been vying for the opportunity to host a bowl game -- among them are international locations, several cities in Miami, Little Rock, Ark., and Los Angeles.
