The Boise State football machine wasn’t operating at full capacity in 2012 after losing a lot of key players, but the amazing thing is that they had a “down year” and still went 11-2 and won a share of the Mountain West title. The standards are high for Chris Petersen’s program, but the program has been built to the point where they can achieve them every year. What will 2013 hold for the Broncos? A cursory look at the Broncos’ schedule leaves you with one thought: This is a team that could go undefeated. Their two toughest games, Washington and BYU, are both on the road, but Boise State has shown they have the ability to go on the road and win in harsh environments. They also have all summer to prepare for the Huskies, and Petersen has an exemplary record in big game openers.
If Boise State can beat Washington and BYU, all they have to do is avoid stumbling against a schedule they should handle easily. That’s obviously easier said than done, but the Broncos have the talent advantage and program experience to get the job done. Whether that puts them in contention for the BCS title game is another story, but Boise State can use 2013 as one last chance to make the entire process look foolish.
The most conservative estimates should put the Broncos at 10-2, but this is one of the two or three teams in the country most likely to run the table. It’s a difficult accomplishment, but the table is set for the Broncos. They just need to go out and do it.
