Justin Worley officially named 2013 Tennessee starting quarterback

Have the Vols narrowed their QB race from four down to one?

USA TODAY Sports

Update: This is official.

Justin Worley will be the starting quarterback for Tennessee's season opener against Austin Peay, via ESPN. Worley reportedly beat out redshirt freshman Nathan Peterman along with true freshmen Riley Ferguson and Josh Dobbs for the position.

Worley was Tyler Bray’s backup over the last two years, appearing in nine games while completing 63 of 110 passes for 758 yards and one touchdown against five interceptions. His best game came as a freshman against Middle Tennessee State in 2011, when he completed 23 of 32 pass attempts for 291 yards and a touchdown in a 24-0 Volunteer victory.

New head coach Butch Jones appears to be going with experience at the quarterback position considering Worley was the only contender with collegiate game experience. All three freshmen were three-star prospects. Ferguson was perhaps the most hyped of the bunch, holding offers from Alabama, Clemson and LSU. Peterman was recruited by Jones at Cincinnati and was thought to perhaps have an advantage because of that.

SB Nation’s own Rocky Top Talk noted Worley was the most likely candidate last week. Be sure to check in with them for analysis and more as the season draws near.
