Jake Waters named Kansas State starter, but Daniel Sams will play

The JUCO transfer has earned the starting quarterback job, but Daniel Sams will still figure into the gameplan.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder has finally made a decision, sort of. The longtime coach named Jake Waters the team's starting quarterback on Monday morning, but said that Daniel Sams will also see playing time as well.

Waters came to Kansas State earlier this year as a transfer from Iowa Western Community College, where he guided the team to an undefeated record and JUCO National Championship in 2012. Waters passed for over 3,500 yards and a gaudy 39 touchdowns compared to only three interceptions, and should give the Wildcats a better passing offense than they had under Collin Klein, who was rather successful himself.

Snyder did say that Sams will still see playing time, but that may not necessarily come at quarterback. The sophomore from Louisiana is athletic enough to play other roles on the field, but he could also be brought in as a change of pace under center. Whatever the plan is for Sams, though, I’d imagine we’ll see it on the field before Snyder decides to talk about it.
