Kansas football schedule 2013: Opponents, game dates and more

Are the Jayhawks in for another long season in 2013? Let’s take a look at their schedule and see where they can pick up some badly needed wins.

It's safe to say that the Kansas Jayhawks had a bad year in 2012. New head coach Charlie Weis inherited a bare cupboard, and it showed as the team struggled to a 1-11 record, with their only win coming over an FCS team. They haven't beaten anyone in the Big 12 since Colorado in 2010, and they haven't beaten a team currently in the Big 12 since Iowa State in 2009. Can the Jayhawks end their conference losing streak in 2013? Let's take a look at their schedule and see how they'll fare.

The outlook doesn’t look good for Weis and the Jayhawks. They brought in a ton of JUCOs and transfers, so the talent base should be better, but it’s largely still unproven. Even with a moderate bump in talent, they are still pretty clearly the worst team in the Big 12. They should be able to eclipse their 2012 win total, but it may not be by much.

The Jayhawks open the season against South Dakota, which should be a win, and then have a pair of winnable games against Rice and Louisiana Tech. It would be a great start if they can pick up a win in one of those games, because the wins will become scarce once they enter Big 12 play.

Kansas is looking at a probable seven-game losing streak starting against Texas Tech and ending against West Virginia. In that stretch, the Jayhawks play TCU, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas and Oklahoma State, as well, and it’s difficult to see any of those games turning into wins. Their best chance at a conference win is probably when they travel to Ames to take on Iowa State, but the Cyclones beat Kansas 51-23 last year in Lawrence. The season ends the next week against Kansas State, another game which probably will be a loss.

2013 will be another tough year for Kansas, but it should be better than 2012. Two or three wins is a reasonable goal, and if some of the transfers work out better than expected, the Jayhawks could steal another game or two. A win against a conference opponent would be huge, as it looks really, really bad to go winless in your conference three years in a row. It’s not much, but if Charlie Weis really is going to build something in Lawrence, he’ll have to start somewhere.
