Led by sophomore running back Duke Johnson, the Miami Hurricanes opened their season in style with a 34-6 victory against Florida Atlantic. Johnson did it all for Miami, racking up more than 200 yards from scrimmage.

Miami punted on two of its first three possessions and led just 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. The game didn’t stay close for much longer, however, as Johnson broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Johnson racked up 186 yards on 19 carries, adding another 38 yards on his lone reception. The 186 rushing yards were a new career high, topping the 176 he gained in the final game last season.
Miami added another touchdown and a field goal in the second quarter and took a 20-3 lead into halftime. Florida Atlantic kicked a field goal on its first possession of the second half to make it 20-6, but that was as close as the Owls got. A 63-yard touchdown run by Herb Waters later in the quarter broke the game open. Miami wen't on to add another touchdown.
The Hurricanes didn’t have a lot of success through the air, averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt. They didn’t need to, however, with Miami racking up 305 rushing yards and averaging 8.0 yards per attempt.
Miami’s defense was also solid, limiting FAU to 13 first downs and 250 total yards, many of which came after the game was well out of hand. Florida Atlantic quarterbacks finished a combined 16 of 32 for 117 yards, good for just 3.7 yards per attempt. The Hurricanes will get a bigger test next week when they host No. 10 Florida.
