Stanford to retire John Elway’s No. 7 jersey

The Cardinal will honor their former quarterback at halftime of the Oregon game on Nov. 7.

Malcolm Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Thirty years after John Elway graduated, Stanford will finally retire the No. 7 jersey the former quarterback wore. The ceremony will be held on Nov. 7 at halftime vs. Oregon. Elway joins Ernie Nevers (No. 1) and Jim Plunkett (No. 16) as the only players to have their jerseys retired at Stanford.

Elway played for the Cardinal from 1979-1982, and completed 62% of his passes and connected for 77 touchdowns in his career in Palo Alto. He still holds the school record for most touchdown passes in a game with six. Elway, as you may be aware, went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Denver Broncos, where he is currently the executive vice president for football operations.

Former Stanford running back Toby Gerhart also wore the No. 7, and current players Ty Montgomery and Aziz Shittu will be the last players to ever wear the number for the Cardinal. Shittu, a defensive end and former highly rated recruit, seems pretty excited about that:
