Ex-Virginia Tech RB Michael Holmes reportedly enrolls at unnamed school

The former Hokie is moving on.

USA TODAY Sports

Former Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes has enrolled at a new school, according to John Galle of the Daily News-Record. However, Holmes’ new school has not yet been named and it’s unclear whether or not he will play this year. He is apparently focusing on academics and weighing his options for 2014.

More on Virginia Tech: Gobbler Country

Holmes was “permanently separated” from Virginia Tech in early July after he was convicted on charges of misdemeanor assault and battery. He was involved in a brawl in April, and after the conviction the Virginia Tech student judicial board ruled that he should not be allowed to continue as a student in Blacksburg. Shortly after his dismissal, James Madison showed interest in bringing in Holmes and possibly giving him a scholarship.

If James Madison -- or any other FCS school -- is in fact Holmes’ destination, he’ll be eligible to play for right away.

Holmes didn’t put up big numbers in 2012 for the Hokies, but he was expected to be a major contributor and potentially the No. 1 running back this season. As a redshirt freshman last year, he played in 11 games, carrying 70 times for 280 yards and four touchdowns.
