Georgia’s Malcolm Mitchell out for the year after celebration injury

The Bulldogs’ leading returning receiver is done for the season.

Paul Abell-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell tore an ACL during Saturday's game against Clemson and will miss the remainder of the 2013 season, head coach Mark Richt announced Sunday. In a cruel twist of fate, Mitchell suffered the injury while celebrating Todd Gurley's first-quarter touchdown run.

Here’s the play during which the injury occurred, and you can see Mitchell (No. 26) at the end jumping into the air in celebration, which is the sort of thing that college football players can be seen doing after a touchdown in pretty much every game across the country. This is just a case of absolutely rotten luck.

Mitchell, a junior, came into the year as Georgia's leading returning receiver, so this is a significant blow to the Bulldogs' offense. He finished 2012 with 572 yards receiving on 40 catches, and may have been a more popular target for quarterback Aaron Murray this season. Murray took to Twitter Sunday to offer his support for his injured teammate.

Richt said he expects Mitchell to receive a medical redshirt.
