College football news: SI story taking on water, Yahoo! story picking up steam

Our daily recap of the news and events in college football.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Lots of news and goings-on in a busy Thursday of college football. Let’s hop right to it.

Oklahoma State

The fallout from Sports Illustrated’s “big” story has increasingly continued to gather more around SI and writer Thayer Evans than the Cowboys’ program -- at least for now. After part three of the report alleged wide-spread marijuana usage, four more players had harsh word for Evans, alleging they were misquoted or simply recanting their stories. ESPN’s Brett McMurphy then turned his attention to Evans’s story, finding multiple errors just by checking university records.

One former player did have harsh words for the university -- outside of the report. Artrell Woods, who broke his spine in a weightlifting accident while playing at the school, would like some medical compensation now please.

SEC

In other investigation news, Fletcher Cox, D.J. Fluker and Chad Bumphis are all complying with their respective former schools with regards to the Yahoo! investigation that alleges they took money from agents through a former Alabama player. Cox declined to comment, while one of the agents allegedly involved called the report "libelous".

Tennessee defensive tackle Mo Couch, the lone player named in the report who is still playing at the collegiate level, was declared ineligible by the team for the school’s upcoming game against Oregon.

Texas A&M-Alabama

As the country gears up for what could be the biggest regular season game of the college football season, all eyes remained focused on Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel. Former Auburn (and NBA) star Charles Barkley dislikes Johnny Football so much that he will root for his rival Tide on Saturday. In terms of Alabama's game-planning to stop Manziel, it looks like linebacker C.J. Mosley will be the quarterback's spy for the game.

How big is this game? Texas A&M’s Midnight Yell, a tradition the night before each game, is being televised on ESPN3 ... and Drake may possibly show up.

South Carolina

Steve Spurrier has even more power than you thought. The Ol’ Ball Coach managed to remove sportswriter Ron Morris from The State’s South Carolina beat and placed his friend in the job instead. The State has since announced Morris’s return.

West Virginia

Linebacker D’Vante Henry has been kicked off the team after being arrested for second-degree assault. The three-star junior college transfer was reportedly already on probation with the Mountaineers.

USC

St. Louis rams head coach Jeff Fisher shot down rumors that he would replace Lane Kiffin at USC. Kiffin, by the way, is still the Trojans’ head coach. Fisher played his college ball at USC.

Texas Tech

In actual game news, the Red Raiders upset the visiting No. 24 TCU Horned Frogs, 20-10, in a wild game. With nearly two dozen penalties between the two games and a few apparent missed calls, Horned Frogs' Gary Patterson tried his hardest not to comment on the officiating after the game.

Tulane

Tulane got their second win of the year -- matching their total from the entire 2012 season -- with a big upset on the road at Louisiana Tech. Skip Holtz’s Bulldogs looked helpless against the Green Wave defense and last year’s top offense in the nation has looked stagnant thus far this season.

Arkansas State

The Red Wolves moved to 2-1 under Bryan Harsin with a 41-34 victory over Troy. Recaps of all three games are available here.
