Oregon started slowly in the first quarter. The Ducks still put the game away in the third.
Tennessee vs. Oregon 2013 game recap: Ducks shred the Vols, 59-14
Tennessee took a 7-0 lead, then all hell broke loose.
After Tennessee jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, Oregon turned on the jets and blew the Vols away, scoring 59 straight points until the Volunteers finally found the end zone again in garbage time. The final damage was 59-14, and the game didn’t even seem that close; during the second and third quarters alone, Oregon outscored Tennessee 49-0.
Oregon racked up 687 yards against the Vol defense. It’s not that Tennessee was even inept; it’s just that Oregon is that good.
Box Score Hero: Marcus Mariota completed 23 of 33 passes for a ridiculous 456 yards and four touchdowns, and he added 27 yards rushing and another score on the ground. That is nearly 14 yards per pass attempt, and that is not fair.
Rankings Ramifications: Alabama has No. 1 on lock until further notice after laying waste to Texas A&M in College Station, but just as rock-solid is Oregon’s grasp on No. 2 with a whipping like this.
But Did They Cover? Oregon was favored by 28.5 points, which is what gambling experts call “printing your own money.”
