Vanderbilt wide receiver Chris Boyd, who pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of trying to cover up an alleged rape on June 23, has been dismissed from the football team and athletic program, the school announced Tuesday afternoon. Boyd was previously suspended for the Commodores first three games of the season.

“Vanderbilt’s athletic administration, in conjunction with its head football coach, today dismissed Chris Boyd from the university’s football team and athletic program,” Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs Beth Fortune said in a statement. “The action came after an ongoing review that included information disclosed during a hearing Sept. 13 in Davidson County Criminal Court.
“The review concluded that Mr. Boyd’s admitted actions are clearly inconsistent with the high standards of behavior expected of our student-athletes.”
Boyd, who was set to be one of the Commodores’ starting wideouts this season, carried a partially nude 21-year-old woman from a hallway where she had been dumped back into the room of one of the men prosecutors allege sexually assaulted her. Deputy District Attorney General Tom Thurman said during the plea hearing that Vanderbilt tight end Dillon van der Wal and quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels assisted Boyd in the attempted cover up.
Four former Vanderbilt players -- Brandon Vandenburg, Cory Batey, Brandon Eric Banks and Jaborian McKenzie -- have been charged with rape for the incident that took place in a Vanderbilt dorm room.
