UCLA honors Nick Pasquale with 10-man formation

The Bruins used 10 men on their first offensive play in a tribute to Nick Pasquale.

UCLA had 11 men in the huddle on their first offensive play on Saturday, but the Bruins ran the play with 10 men, a tribute to Nick Pasquale who died after being struck by a vehicle two weeks ago.

Instead of splitting out wide, wide receiver Shaquelle Evans broke the huddle and trotted off the field with his hand pointed up toward the sky. The Bruins then lined up with 10 offensive players, missing one wide receiver, the position Pasquale played.

“You can’t have 12 men on the field, so Shaq volunteered to let Nick go in for him,” UCLA coach Jim Mora said after the game. “Ten players, 11 souls.”

In addition to the image above, Deadspin also has video of Evans running off the field and the play. The Bruins gained five yards on the play and Evans returned to the field for the next play.
