Texas LB Jordan Hicks out for season with Achilles injury

The Longhorns’ defense lost its top tackler for the rest of the year.

Texas Longhorns linebacker Jordan Hicks will miss the remainder of the season due to an Achilles injury suffered in the team’s win over Kansas State on Saturday. Hicks, who also missed the bulk of 2012 because of injury, leads the Longhorns with 41 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss.

The absence of Hicks, a potential all-conference player, is a significant blow to an already-maligned Texas defense. The team gave up a program-record 550 rushing yards to BYU in a loss earlier in the year, prompting Mack Brown to fire defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.

When Hicks went down early last season, Texas’ defense fell off a cliff statistically, and that history has to be worrisome moving forward. There’s no guarantee of a repeat, but Hicks’ injury is an incredibly discouraging development for defense already lacking in both stability and confidence.

Hicks received a medical redshirt last season, and he might be eligible for another one. He has made 15 starts over the course of his career.
