Earl Campbell on Mack Brown: ‘I just hope he doesn’t stay’

Count the Longhorns legend among those who believe Texas’ football program needs a fresh start.

Former Texas running back and Heisman winner Earl Campbell said Sunday he thinks it’s time for the Longhorns to part ways with head coach Mack Brown. Brown has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years, to the point where a return next season is beginning to look unlikely.

Via Fox 26 Houston:

“Very hard [to advocate his ouster] because Coach Brown is a very good man,” Campbell said. “I just hope he doesn’t stay...he’s done some great things. The program, he brought it back, and we don’t need it to get run down where somebody has to start all over again.”

Brown won a BCS national title with Texas in 2005 and led the team to another title game appearance in 2009. Since that season, though, the Longhorns are just 24-18 overall, including their 2-2 record this year. The team has a losing conference record over that span, and it has endured some painful defeats along the way.

This season alone, the Longhorns have given up 40 points or more in a pair of defeats, including a loss to BYU in which the Cougars ran for 550 yards. That cost defensive coordinator Manny Diaz his job, and if Campbell and the numerous others advocating change have their way, Brown will be next.
