College football weekend news: Fallout from USC’s firing of Lane Kiffin

After the school fired head coach Lane Kiffin in the wee hours of Sunday morning, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron was named interim head coach. Athletic director Pat Haden held a press conference to announce the move, but he refused to discuss the coaching search or any of the candidates we figured could take over for Kiffin.
The recruiting fallout, both positive and negative, began quickly, as rumors swirled that four-star linebacker Derick Calhoun had decommitted from USC -- rumors that his family quickly denied. Meanwhile, four-star 2015 wide receiver Cordell Broadus, the son of Snoop Dogg, said Kiffin should have been fired “a while ago.” This appears to not be an uncommon sentiment among recruits and the dismissal is expected to have a positive impact on USC’s recruiting.

Texas
The calls for Mack Brown’s job are quickly picking up steam with Texas legend Earl Campbell joining the legion of Longhorn supporters saying Brown should not return next season. Texas is 2-2 this season after embarrassing blowout losses to BYU and Ole Miss.
Notre Dame
After nearly single-handedly putting his team in a 14-0 hole against Oklahoma, Irish quarterback Tommy Rees has received the dreaded vote of confidence from head coach Brian Kelly. The coach said there is "no question" Rees is the team's starter after a three-interception performance against the Sooners.
Polls
The new polls are out -- first up, the AP Poll. Georgia is up three spots after a win over LSU (who fall four), Oklahoma is up three after their win over Notre Dame, Texas Tech rose four places on a bye week, Oklahoma State fell ten slots, and Arizona State and Maryland joined the poll while Notre Dame and Wisconsin fell out.
For the Coaches' Poll, Georgia rose four places, LSU fell five, Oklahoma State dropped nine, and Northern Illinois, Arizona State and Nebraska joined the Top 25 while Ole Miss, Notre Dame and Wisconsin dropped out.
Georgia
Star running back Todd Gurley is day-to-day with a sprained ankle suffered in the second quarter of Georgia's win over LSU. The Bulldogs face Tennessee this week and head coach Mark Richt has yet to announce whether Gurley or Keith Marshall will be the team's running back for that contest.
Louisiana-Monroe
Quarterback Kolton Browning, the 2012 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year, will miss the rest of the year with a leg injury -- critically hampering the Warhawks' chances this season. ULM was 2-3 this season with a big road win against Wake Forest and will now have to face their conference schedule with redshirt sophomore Brayle Brown taking snaps.
Cal
Junior defensive end/linebacker Chris McCain has been dismissed from the team due to conduct detrimental to the team. He was tied for tenth on the team with eleven tackles on the year. He also had one quarterback hurry and a fumble forced.
Arizona State
The Sun Devils are slowly releasing their uniforms for their game against Notre Dame, with pictures of gloves, socks and sleeves thus far available.
Mercer
Defensive back Alex Avant had one of the best pick-sixes you will ever see, grabbing an interception against Drake and taking it to the house in a phenomenal play.
