Jack Del Rio, Chris Petersen lead odds for next USC football coach

The former Jaguars’ head man and Trojan All-American linebacker could be in line for the coveted job.

With Lane Kiffin out at USC, rumors are buzzing as to who may take over the storied football program. New odds have been released on potential candidates, and Bovada has odds on former Trojan linebacker and current Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio as the most likely candidate.

Broncos DC Jack Del Rio 3/1

Boise State HC Chris Petersen 5/1

Vanderbilt HC James Franklin 5/1

49ers OC Greg Roman 6/1

USC DC Clancy Pendergast 7/1

Alabama DC Kirby Smart 8/1

Former Buccaneers HC Jon Gruden 8/1

Washington HC Steve Sarkisian 8/1

Clemson OC Chad Morris 9/1

Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin 12/1

Former Chiefs HC Herm Edwards 15/1

USC interim HC Ed Orgeron 20/1

Del Rio was an All-American linebacker at USC, MVP of the 1985 Rose Bowl. He began his coaching career in 1997, the year after his professional career concluded, as a strength and condition coach with the New Orleans Saints, and moved on to become a linebackers coach with the Ravens two years later. He was the Panthers' defensive coordinator in 2002, and was hired as the head coach of the Jaguars in 2003, a position he held until 2011.

In Jacksonville, Del Rio compiled a 68-71 record and made two playoff appearances, including a loss to the Patriots in the Divisional Round of the 2007 playoffs. After being fired from the Jaguars, he took over as the Broncos' defensive coordinator in 2012.

Del Rio is the only coach on the list without collegiate coaching experience. Bovada considers Boise State head coach Chris Petersen and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin as the two next likely candidates, with 49ers (and former Stanford) offensive coordinator Greg Roman right behind them.
