Update: The team allegedly knows, according to the Los Angeles Times.
USC quarterback situation remains a mystery, Week 2 edition
Kiffin’s decision for Saturday night’s game against Washington State is not for you to know.
Lane Kiffin is a walking riddle, and a man that mere mortals cannot figure out -- not even his own players. Kiffin has remained so quiet about who will start at quarterback for his No. 25 USC squad Saturday night against Washington State that he won’t even tell his own team who will line up under center, via Sports Illustrated.
Quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Max Wittek are apparently the only players who know who will start for the Trojans, although reports suggest it will be Kessler.
Kessler started in the Trojans’ opener against Hawaii, with Wittek getting some snaps in the second half. Kessler completed 10-of-19 pass attempts for 95 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Wittek was 5-of-10 for 77 yards. Both were four-star quarterbacks in the Trojans’ 2011 class, with Wittek being ranked slightly higher than Kessler.
Kiffin has a long history of allegedly using bizarre methods to try and one-up his opponent, including deflating balls against Oregon, having players switch numbers against Colorado, and an endless barrage of two-point conversion attempts regardless of opponent or score.
The Trojans open up Pac-12 play early this season against the Cougars, who lost a close game against Auburn in their opener. Washington State knows who their starter will be -- Connor Halliday, who threw for 344 yards on 65 attempts against the Tigers.
