Barry Switzer on Johnny Manziel: ‘I wanted to jerk his face mask’

Another former coach sounds off on Johnny Football.

Thomas Campbell-USA TODAY Sports

Barry Switzer is the latest college football personality to throw his opinion of Johnny Manziel into the ring, telling ESPN Radio that he "wanted to jerk [Manziel's] face mask" and "grab him," via College Football Talk.

The comments come after Manziel received a taunting penalty in Texas A&M’s opener against Rice. Manziel had been suspended for the first half of the game after an NCAA investigation into an alleged pay-for-autographs scandal, and was benched by head coach Kevin Sumlin after receiving the penalty.

Switzer said he was “disappointed in [Manziel’s] actions,” and implied he would have taken more violent action than Sumlin’s approach.

“For him to act so arrogant, I wanted to jerk his face mask and I wanted to grab him,” Switzer went on to say. “Of course you get fired for that now; in the old days you could get away with that. It’s the world we live in. It’s a misplaced value system. When I see this happen I wonder where the core value system comes from, if he has a core value system. This young man needs a damn hell of a lot of development.”

Switzer’s entire interview can be found on ESPN.

Fellow ex-coach Lou Holtz had similar comments about Johnny Football, saying on ESPN that he would have grabbed the quarterback “by the throat.” Earlier in the year, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops implied the quarterback could see time behind bars.

Manziel managed to throw three touchdown passes on just eight throws against the Owls.
