College football news: Mixed bag for the Sun Devils and new designs in the ACC

Arizona State saw a big win and perhaps an even bigger loss Friday while two ACC schools unveiled new designs. All that and more in our college football news roundup.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Plenty of college football news took place around the country Thursday so we decided to compile it all right here in a handy roundup.

Arizona State

The Sun Devils easily dispatched the visiting Sacramento State Hornets, 55-0, on Thursday night. Quarterback Taylor Kelly completed 23 of 31 passes for 300 yards and five touchdowns. Now, the not-so-good news: linebacker Chris Young suffered an injury in the game and had to be helped off the field, but head coach Todd Graham seemed to suggest it was not serious.

The even worse news? Arizona State’s recruiting coordinator was arrested on felony domestic assault charges in August. The official charges against Sherman Morris are “felony aggravated assault-serious physical injury and felony domestic violence-impeded breathing.”

California

Starting defensive end Chris McCain and second-team wide receiver Kenny Lawler will miss the Bears' Week 2 game against Portland State. McCain had five tackles while Lawler caught one pass for seven yards in the team's opener against Northwestern.

East Carolina

The Pirates put together their second convincing win in a row, defeating the visiting Florida Atlantic Owls 31-13. The victory comes nearly a week after dispatching Old Dominion 52-38. East Carolina certainly looks like a contender in the weak Conference USA East and the Pirates now stand on top of the standings with this early conference win.

Maryland

The Terrapins seem ready to spend more of Kevin Plank’s money considering rendered drawings of a proposed indoor practice facility were spotted in the school’s football facility. Questions still remain about where on campus such a facility would go, but Maryland seems determined to improve their facilities with the upcoming conference move.

North Carolina

The Tar Heels are getting involved in the “do weird stuff with your field” parade, unveiling an argyle design in their end zones. The new design will first be utilized in the team’s home opener against Middle Tennessee State.

Texas A&M

Tom Brady became the latest football figure to be asked about Johnny Manziel, but he predictably answered the silly question with a non-answer. Brady's comments come after more violent opinions from Barry Switzer and Lou Holtz.
