Florida Gators tight end Clay Burton leveled Miami Hurricanes defensive back on a block early in the first quarter Saturday afternoon, knocking Gunter out of the game with an apparent head injury.
Clay Burton’s controversial hit on Miami’s Ladarius Gunter
Florida’s Clay Burton might have taken a cheap shop that sent Miami DB Ladarius Gunter out of the game.
Burton was flagged on the play for a late, and Miami fans were calling it a cheap shot. The Gators got a first down before the hit so it just took off 15 yards on the drive, which ended in a Gators fumble. Gunter has since returned to the field, but ‘Canes fans will likely want more discipline for the hit.
If it had happened during the play, it might still be controversial. Burton didn’t leave his feet and there’s no apparent helmet-to-helmet contact, but the contact was a little over the top and Gunter wasn’t looking. We’ll see if some Miami DBs, or Gunter himself, will look for some measure of retribution the next time Burton is making his way down the field.
