Munchie Legaux injury: Cincinnati QB carted off after awful hit

Munchie Legaux was hurt badly in Cincinatti’s game against Illinois, and it looked brutal.

Update from his head coach:

Terrible news on a bad day for Cincinnati: quarterback Munchie Legaux suffered a horrific leg injury, causing those from both benches to tend to the Bearcats’ senior leader as he lay on the ground in pain before being carted off.

Legaux was trying to lead a fourth quarter comeback as Cincinnati trailed 31-17 against an Illinois team that struggled to put away an FCS team last week. As he got rid of a pass, he was sandwiched by a pair of Illinois defenders. (That’s a link to a .GIF of him being hit. We opted not to post it here, because it’s rather gruesome.) He immediately went down, and everybody around the Illini’s stadium quickly realized the severity of the injury:

From our Cincinnati blogger:

It’s horrendous news for Tommy Tuberville’s squad. Legaux is key to the Bearcats as they try to win the inaugural AAC championship, throwing for 1,716 yards last season while adding 335 yards on 6.1 per carry.

All thoughts are with Legaux, but the team has to play on with about ten minutes to go and a game to win. This puts Brendon Kay, who has been listed as the “or” starter alongside Legaux, in the drivers’ seat. Over his career, he’s been a more accurate passer, completing 63.0 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and just two picks last year as opposed to 52.2 with 13 and nine picks for Legaux, but he’s not nearly as good a playmaker as Legaux.

Hopefully Legaux can return in games to come, but the initial glimpses of the injury made it seem like he could miss some time.
