Sam Houston State vs. Texas A&M 2013 game recap: Johnny Manziel and the Aggies cruise to a 65-28 victory

Sam Houston State made it a game early, but it was all Texas A&M after the first quarter.

Texas A&M got off to a slow start, but Johnny Manziel and the Aggies got rolling in the second quarter and pulled away for a 65-28 win against Sam Houston State.

Manziel threw an interception on Texas A&M’s second possession, but it was one of his only mistakes on the day. He completed 29-of-42 passes for 426 yards and three touchdowns. With the Aggies blowing the game open, Manziel didn’t even play a full three quarters. Texas A&M led 30-14 at halftime, although Sam Houston State cut the lead to 30-21 less than a minute into the second half. From there, however, it was all Texas A&M.

The Aggies went on a 35-7 run over the rest of the third quarter, including two touchdown passes by Manziel. They scored three touchdowns in just over four minutes of game time to close out the quarter. Backup quarterback Kenny Hill took over for Manziel and threw a touchdown to make it 65-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

While Texas A&M’s offense didn’t have any trouble scoring, Sam Houston State was able to find some holes in the Aggie defense. Texas A&M allowed 240 rushing yards with Sam Houston State averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

Box Score Hero: In a game full of offensive stars, Manziel still stood out. He threw for 426 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Evans was one of Manziel’s favorite targets, hauling in seven catches for 155 yards.

Rankings Ramifications: Texas A&M entered the game at No. 7 and the win against Sam Houston State isn’t likely to do much to sway the voters. They should enter next week’s game against No. 1 Alabama in the same range.

But Did They Cover? The Aggies opened as a 45-point favorite, and the line eventually moved to 35 points. With the 37-point victory, Texas A&M was able to cover the final line.
