Mark Mangino will be the next offensive coordinator at Iowa State, the school announced Monday afternoon. Mangino replaces Courtney Messingham, who was fired by ISU shortly after the conclusion of the regular season.

Mangino brings to Ames good experience and a solid track record -- he was the offensive coordinator when Oklahoma beat Florida State for the BCS title in 2001, and was named the nation’s top assistant coach that year. He followed that up with a successful run as the head man at KU, where he led the Jayhawks to a 12-1 record in 2007 and an Orange Bowl bid.
But he also brings with him quite a bit of baggage. His tenure at Kansas was marred and ultimately put to an end by his reputation for berating and otherwise mistreating players. Recurring reports of those altercations resulted in an internal review by the school. One such incident, which happened after a punt return score by Raimond Pendleton in 2007, was caught on video. That year he also lost his temper with a student parking attendant who had given him a ticket.
In addition to those things, his KU program reported several major NCAA rules violations in 2005, resulting in sanctions the following season.
After leaving Kansas in 2009, Mangino had been out of coaching for several years before accepting an assistant position at Youngstown State in 2013.
