Jameis Winston needs to grow up, according to former Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden. The legendary coach, who owns the FBS records for most career wins and bowl victories, spoke critically about Winston on ESPN, although he did praise the Heisman Trophy winner's ability to block out off-the-field troubles when it's time to play.
Bobby Bowden on Jameis Winston: ‘He does things kids in grammar school would do’
Former FSU head coach Bobby Bowden joined a chorus of college football greats who have criticized Jameis Winston.

Winston, 20, was suspended by FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher for the team’s 23-17 overtime victory over Clemson after the quarterback was observed shouting obscene comments on campus. He is scheduled to have a disciplinary hearing with the university for his involvement in a 2012 sexual assault accusation for which he wasn’t arrested or charged. And Winston is also being investigated for possibly accepting money for autographs.
Bowden, 84, retired from coaching following the 2009 season, three years before Winston’s redshirt freshman season. Bowden coached FSU for 34 seasons and was the head coach of West Virginia and Howard for the 10 years before that.
Former Auburn running back Bo Jackson also criticized Winston recently, and said he has reached out to the FSU quarterback in the past:
“I really don’t know who is giving this young man guidance,” Jackson said. “I have attempted, I have communicated with him and I just talked to him like I was his dad. If I told you what I told him, it’ll probably singe the hairs in your ears.”
Former Georgia running back and 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, Herschel Walker, also joined in. Walker said on The Paul Finebaum Show that he did not vote for Winston to win the Heisman Trophy in 2013 and that he won’t give him a vote in 2014 “until his act is cleaned up.”
Fisher has come to Winston’s defense as of late, and called Winston a “very mature” person who can “put things away like a man does.”
