This will be the final weekend of college football before the first College Football Playoff ranking is released on October 28th. We’re also past the midpoint of the season, as we start to get a better grasp of who the contenders and pretenders are.

One team that's established itself as a surprise contender is No. 1 Mississippi State. They've got a road test this week when they face the Kentucky Wildcats, as this will be the Bulldogs' first road game as a ranked team, let alone the No. 1. Both the 6-0 Dawgs and 5-2 Wildcats have made surprising jumps from last year, when MSU finished 7-6 while UK finished 2-10.
As for other contenders, the No. 3 Ole Miss Rebels will face a tougher road test when they head to Death Valley to face the No. 24 LSU Tigers. The 7-0 Rebels are looking to stay at least tied for first-place with Mississippi State in the SEC West in addition to remaining undefeated. The Tigers are looking for their signature win over a highly-ranked rival, something they seem to get at least one of every year under head coach Les Miles.
The game that may be the most entertaining to watch could by the No. 22 West Virginia Mountaineers taking on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Following their massive upset over then-No. 4 Baylor, WVU is now in the mix for the Big 12 title, as well as a spot in a New Year's bowl game.
While it won’t carry the luster of the aforementioned games, Michigan and No. 8 Michigan State will hold their annual in-state rivalry game, though both programs are heading in opposite directions. MSU is undefeated in conference play and looking for their second-straight Big Ten Championship, while Michigan is floundering at 3-4 and looking like a longshot to even become bowl-eligible.
