Penn State spikes ball with clock stopped on crucial late drive

Penn State drove the ball in the two-minute drill to set up a game-tying field goal against Ohio State. But they could’ve had one more play if not for this gaffe:

That’s Christian Hackenberg spiking the ball as if the clock was live, whereas it was in fact not live because the receiver had gone out of bounds on the play before. It’s possible that this was just to avoid a delay-of-game -- note the playclock -- but that’s still a bummer of a communication error. It would’ve been nice to have three potential shots at a game-winner instead of two. Instead, we’re headed to OT.
