BYU QB Taysom Hill suffers broken leg during Utah State game

The star quarterback’s leg twisted at the end of a scramble.

BYU starting quarterback and Heisman contender Taysom Hill was sidelined in the second quarter against Utah State, with his left leg buckling beneath him during a tackle.

[Update: shortly after halftime, BYU announced the injury is a left leg fracture, and that “he will not return. Further evaluations will be carried out later.” If the injury ends his season, he’s already played in too many games to be eligible for a medical redshirt, but he does have another year of eligibility anyway. We’ll hope for the best, of course.]

The junior hobbled to the sideline training table, where he was surrounded by teammates and staff and in clear pain. After a moment, trainers carted him off the field and into the locker room.

Hill entered the night with 13 touchdowns and 1,304 total yards through four games.

BYU's backup quarterback, Christian Stewart, has very little experience, throwing only two passes in 2013 and none so far in 2014. Rivals.com lists the 6'2 senior as having had no major scholarship offers and no recruiting ranking coming out of Orem, Utah. He did have a decent fall preseason camp, according to beat writer reports.

“They just need to do their best to compensate,” Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall told ESPN when asked what he’d tell his players during the halftime break after they just watched their on-field leader go down.

The Cougars hit Friday with a 4-0 record and hopes of a New Year’s bowl, but currently trail USU, 28-14, and are now without their best player for at least some time.

Utah State is also without its starting quarterback, as Chuckie Keeton suffered a major injury for the second year in a row and could miss the rest of the season.

Developing. We’ll add more as it’s available.
