Georgia RB Todd Gurley’s suspension could reportedly last full season

Here’s our story on the autograph dealer who’d been trying to snitch on Todd Gurley.

Georgia running back Todd Gurley has been suspended indefinitely by the university for an alleged violation of NCAA rules. Gurley was suspended by the athletic department, and not by the NCAA. The school provided no details, but coach Mark Richt gave a statement on the university website.

“I¹m obviously very disappointed,” said UGA head football coach Mark Richt. “The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri.”

Update: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the suspension could be more than just a few games, with an AJC source describing the memorabilia case as “significant” and adding that “Gurley is unlikely to be cleared to return to the field this season.”

Gurley is a Heisman candidate this year — SB Nation’s Andy Hutchins named him the frontrunner on Wednesday — and was widely considered one of the best running backs in the country. He has averaged 8.2 yards per carry this season and has eight touchdowns. He will be a big loss for the Bulldogs, who face the Missouri Tigers in a game that could potentially decide the SEC East.

Nick Chubb is the likely replacement for Gurley. He has carried the ball 31 times this year (Gurley has 94 carries) and has rushed for 7.2 yards per carry. Five-star freshman running back Sony Michel, who looked good early this season, is out with injury and currently unavailable.
