Watch the 2014 Idaho Potato Bowl: Air Force vs. Western Michigan game time, TV schedule, live online streaming

Potatoes and football. What more could you ask for?

SB Nation 2014 College Football Guide

On the final weekend before Christmas, college football fans are treated to an appetizer of Saturday bowl games between teams not often seen on the national stage. That will be the case in the 2014 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where Western Michigan will take on Air Force in a battle of teams who probably didn’t expect to be here back in August.

The Falcons, like the other service academies, feature an offense that often ranks among the best at running the ball. Air Force ranks eighth in the nation rushing offense (272.2 yards per game), but passes the ball pretty well when they need to. Quarterback Kale Pearson has 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions to go along with 646 rushing yards.

As for the Broncos of the MAC, they enter this game with the 53rd-ranked rushing offense (178.5 yards per game), led by running back Jarvion Franklin (1,525 yards and 24 scores). Quarterback Zach Terrell has thrown for 3,146 yards and 23 touchdowns to guide the nation's 37th-ranked passing offense (264.8 yards per game).

The numbers

Rankings and records: Neither team is ranked. WMU is 8-4 and 6-2 in the MAC. Air Force is 9-3 and 5-2 in the Mountain West.

Vegas: Western Michigan opened as 3-point favorites. The line has since moved to 1. The over/under is 58 points.

Weather forecast: High of 39 and cloudy.

Two things at stake

A victory for WMU would give the Broncos nine wins after going 1-11 last year, marking one of the biggest turnarounds in college football this year.

A victory for Air Force gets them to 10 wins, which is a tremendous accomplishment for any service academy.

One big matchup

Kale Pearson vs. WMU Defense

The Falcons come into this game with a balanced offense, and it begins with senior quarterback Kale Pearson. On the ground, Pearson has run 157 times for 646 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and six scores. Through the air, Pearson has thrown for 1,513 yards and 14 touchdowns. If the Broncos can shut him down, they can take control of this game, but if they can’t, the Falcons will be hard to stop.
