The Aztecs and Midshipmen do battle at Qualcomm Stadium.
It’s hard to complain about getting a bowl game in beautiful California during the winter, and San Diego State and Navy get the benefit of playing in this year’s Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Midshipmen enter this game having won their previous three games to get to bowl eligibility for the third straight season. They get to face the Aztecs of the Mountain West, who went 3-1 down the stretch to finish 7-5 and make a bowl game for the fifth straight year.
This isn’t the first time these two teams have faced in each other in this venue. The two squared off in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl, which the Aztecs won handily, 35-14. After going to just four bowl games in 41 years, the Aztecs are going to the postseason for the fifth straight season. That streak started in that very bowl game, which also happened to be Brady Hoke’s final year as coach before heading to Michigan.

Two things at stake
A win for Navy puts a solid cap on an up-and-down season.
A win for SDSU gets them to at least eight wins for the fifth straight year. They have not won fewer than eight games since 2009.
One big matchup
Keenan Reynolds vs. the Aztecs Defense
Everything Navy does on offense starts and often ends with this junior quarterback. Reynolds leads all quarterbacks nationally in rushing yards (1,082), rushing touchdowns (20) and rushes (205) despite missing two games. The junior is also first in yards per completion (17.42). He had the active FBS streak for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (14) before it was snapped Nov. 1 against Notre Dame.
