SB Nation 2014 College Football Guide

Two of the nation’s best passing offenses will square off in Memphis on Monday, when the West Virginia Mountaineers take on the Texas A&M Aggies. Both teams rank in the top 12 nationally in passing offense.

Texas A&M was considered a playoff contender into October, winning its first five games to shoot up to No. 6 in the AP Poll. It was considerably helped by its opening road win over what was then No. 9 South Carolina, a team that went on to finish 6-6. After that torrid start, the Aggies lost three in a row and five of their final seven games, with a win against Auburn their defining victory of the season.

West Virginia also started the season strong, rising up to No. 20 in the AP Poll after a 6-2 start with losses to Alabama and Oklahoma and a two-touchdown win over Baylor. After a one-point loss to TCU, the Mountaineers were blown out by Texas and lost a close one to Kansas State, taking them out of the national picture. Like A&M, they have considerable offensive firepower despite their mediocre record.

Two things at stake

The winner of this game will gain some positive momentum after a disappointing season.

A win for Texas A&M would be its fourth bowl victory in a row.

One big matchup

Kevin White vs. Texas A&M secondary. White was one of the most dangerous weapons in college football this season, catching 102 passes for 1,318 yards and nine touchdowns. He started the year with seven consecutive 100+ yard games, including a 13-catch, 216-yard performance against Maryland. Since then, he has recorded only game of at least 100 yards (Texas), and will look to get back on track against an Aggie secondary giving up 7.0 yards per pass attempt this season.
