Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema is drawing interest for the Nebraska job, according to multiple reports by FootballScoop.com and FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman. Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst is reportedly very interested in bringing in the former 68-24 Wisconsin coach to Lincoln to replace Bo Pelini, who was fired on Nov. 30th.
Bret Bielema reportedly a Nebraska target, but says he’s ‘all Hog’
Would the former Wisconsin head coach leave Arkansas to return to the Big Ten? Appears unlikely.
Update: ESPN’s Chris Low reports Bielema says he’s “all Hog” and won’t be going to Nebraska, so we’ve diagrammed what “all Hog” Bret Bielema looks like.
Bielema’s a surprise, as his name hasn’t appeared on many lists of potential candidates. From a stylistic perspective, the three-time Big Ten champion would be a good fit for the Cornhuskers, who have a tradition of a strong running game and defense. That’s been Bielema’s calling card at both Wisconsin and Arkansas.
He’s had a tough time in his first two seasons in Fayetteville, but his Razorback team finally broke a 17-game SEC losing streak, shutting out LSU and Ole Miss in November. If Bielema does decide to leave, his buyout is somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 million, depending on the timing of his exit.
What Nebraska needs
Eichorst played football at Wisconsin-Whitewater, and was an executive in the Wisconsin athletic department during Bielema’s tenure in Madison.
For what it’s worth, Bielema reiterated his commitment to the Razorbacks earlier on Wednesday:
More from Bielema: "I can’t tell you how excited I am for next year and obviously my commitment to Arkansas in the long term."
