The Terps and Cardinal face off for the first time ever.
The Maryland Terrapins will attempt to win their first bowl game in four years when they face the Stanford Cardinal in the 2014 Foster Farms Bowl on December 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET, with television coverage on ESPN.
The Foster Farms Bowl, now 13 years old, had previously been played as the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, the Emerald Bowl, and the creatively-monikered San Francisco Bowl. Until this season, the game had been played at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. The 2014 game is the first to be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
Maryland had a productive first season in the Big Ten, finishing with a 4-4 record in its new conference and reaching a second consecutive bowl game. This marks the first time that the Terps have reached back-to-back bowl games since 2007-08. Maryland is making its second trip to the San Francisco bowl game, having lost to Oregon State in the 2007 Emerald Bowl.
Stanford struggled through an up-and-down season. The Cardinal defense showed no signs of slipping, despite having lost defensive coordinator Derek Mason. Stanford finished second nationally in scoring defense and fifth in total defense, giving up just 16 points and 287 yards per game. Stanford’s offense struggled to find a consistent running attack, though, leading to three losses in which its opponents failed to top 20 points.

The numbers
Rankings and records: Neither Stanford nor Maryland are ranked in the last regular season poll. Stanford finished 7-5 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12, while Maryland was 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten.
Vegas: Stanford opened as 13-point favorites. The line has since moved to 14. The over/under is set at 48 points.
Weather forecast: Skies should be clear, but temperatures aren’t likely to get out of the low 40s.
Two things at stake
Stanford, playing in its first non-BCS bowl game since 2009, is attempting to avoid two bowl losses in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1933-34. The Cardinal are also protecting a seven-game winning streak against unranked opponents, going back to November 2013.
Maryland has not won a bowl game since the 2010 Military Bowl, and has not won a bowl game in four seasons under Randy Edsall. The former Connecticut coach has shown steady progress with the Terps, and a win at the Foster Farms Bowl would give Maryland, which went 7-6 in 2013, an improved record for the third straight year.
One big matchup
C.J. Brown vs. the Stanford defense: Maryland's senior quarterback is the team's leading passer and rusher, accounting for more than 2,600 total yards and 20 touchdowns this season. Brown has faced six of the nation's top 20 defenses this season. The results have not been good: Brown completed just 49.7 percent of pass attempts for 149 yards per game, with four touchdowns against six interceptions, and hos quarterback rating was over 100 just once. Stanford, ranked fifth in total defense, is as good as any team that Brown has faced, and a lackluster performance against the Cardinal likely won't be enough.
