Texas A&M’s Matt Joeckel transfers, putting QB job in inexperienced hands

Aggies quarterback race now down to Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen.

Thomas B. Shea

The Texas A&M quarterback race is down to two, as the school announced that senior Matt Joeckel will transfer from the program.

This spring, Joeckel (22-of-37 for 293 yards and two touchdowns last season as Johnny Manziel’s backup, plus some experience in 2012) was expected to compete with sophomore Kenny Hill and incoming freshman Kyle Allen for the starting job. Now, the Aggies are guaranteed to be starting a relatively inexperienced player when the season starts at South Carolina this August.

Hill attempted 22 passes last season as a backup, but was arrested for public intoxication in March and could become the second straight Aggie starting quarterback to be arrested before the season. Allen was the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the class of 2014 and enrolled early to participate in spring practice.

Joeckel has graduated, so he will be eligible to play immediately, and according to Bruce Feldman, he could end up staying in state.
