Dana Holgorsen says coaches ‘lie in recruiting a bunch’

“That’s just kind of part of it.”

Dan Friend-USA TODAY Sports

Dana Holgorsen has never been shy about sharing his opinion, and on Monday, the West Virginia head coach stated the obvious: if you’re completely truthful in recruiting, you’re probably not going to be very good at it.

Luckily for Holgorsen, it seems he’s getting better at lying. His 2015 recruiting class is ranked 21st in the 247Sports Composite ratings, while the 2013 and 2014 classes ranked 30th and 38th, respectively.

But after a miserable 4-8 finish last year and a pedestrian 7-6 season the year before, he’s on the hot seat, meaning his lying better improve even more rapidly.

EDSBS has investigated more of Holgo’s claims, including several about pants.

Update, August 13: Holgorsen, in a statement released by WVU:

At my press conference on Monday, I was speaking with a group of our beat reporters, and the subject of the NCAA legislation concerning unlimited meals and its impact on recruiting was brought up. In a lighthearted moment, I made a comment in jest that was meant to imply that the unlimited meals will be an important selling point with recruits and that all coaches will have to be salesmen on this matter. I further implied that the best way for recruits to understand what really is occurring on a campus is by having them talk to the current student-athletes. I used a poor choice of words in explaining this position.
