Michigan reportedly looks into Boston College, UConn athletic directors

Dave Brandon’s days might be numbered in Ann Arbor.

Michigan has gauged the interest of athletic directors Warde Manuel from UConn and Brad Bates from Boston College in applying for the athletic director job with the Wolverines, according to CoachingSearch.com. Both played football at Michigan.

Manuel is a graduate of Michigan and played football under Bo Schembechler. Before accepting the UConn athletic director position, Manuel served six years as the athletic director at Buffalo.

Bates was also a part of the Wolverines football program under Schembechler. Bates holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Michigan, and a doctorate degree from Vanderbilt.

Before accepting the athletic director position at Boston College, he spent ten years as the athletic director at Miami (OH) University.

Michigan has not announced the firing of current athletic director Dave Brandon, who has come under fire for alienating fans and not getting winning results on the football field. The program is under further scrutiny this week after football coach Brady Hoke did not pull a possibly concussed player from his team’s game against Minnesota. Brandon is the former CEO of Domino’s Pizza and is under contract through 2018.

A Pittsburgh radio show has also reported that Brandon could be on his way out, and that Manuel and Bates were possible targets. Michigan has shown an affinity for hiring “Michigan Men.”

While UConn won last year’s national championship in men’s basketball, most of Michigan’s problems have come from football. Neither Manuel nor Bates has led a successful football program for quite some time.
