Baylor QB Seth Russell is out for the season with a neck injury

Bad news for Baylor.

Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports

Update: Baylor announced that Russell will miss the remainder of the season with a neck injury and will have surgery.

Russell will be replaced by true freshman Jarrett Stidham, the team’s highest-rated QB recruit ever.

Baylor quarterback Seth Russell left the fourth quarter of Baylor’s win over Iowa State with a neck injury and didn’t return. Baylor has now announced that Russell broke a bone in his neck.

Baylor has a bye next week, and Russell hasn’t necessarily been ruled out for any games. Baylor has Kansas State the week after the bye, then plays Oklahoma on November 14th.

The Bears are ranked second in the country and look like a legitimate College Football Playoff team. The offense is ridiculous, scoring 63.8 points per game through six games, which was 13.7 points more than anyone else in the country. They also lead the country in total offense at 719.7 yards per game — almost 100 more than anyone else. So losing Russell could really hurt those numbers.

Last year, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty didn’t miss much time, despite having two cracks in bones near his spine. So the Bears aren’t strangers to scary injuries, but it’s unclear if Russell will be as lucky.
