Last week’s games couldn’t have been more opposite for these two teams. One blew out an opponent, the other was blown out, and that’s representative of which way both teams are trending.
How to watch Michigan vs. Maryland on TV or online, plus 3 things to know
Can Michigan keep up its rise? The troubled Terps’ primetime game is now a nooner.
Michigan jumped into the top 25 this week after the Wolverines took down BYU, 31-0. Jim Harbaugh’s team is 3-1, with its only loss at Utah, and it now appears to have a pretty decent offense to complement a good defense. The advanced stats love the Wolverines because of that defense, and because of how well they played Utah on the road — the same Utah team that destroyed Oregon in Eugene — this team should only get better.
Meanwhile, Maryland is an absolute mess. The Terrapins just lost, 45-6, to West Virginia, dropping to 2-2 on a season that also includes a loss to Bowling Green. The defense struggled to stop both West Virginia and Bowling Green, and the offense has been even worse, particularly the passing game. Coach Randy Edsall is firmly on the hot seat, and the game against Michigan marks the first part of a difficult six-game Big Ten stretch that includes games vs. Michigan, at Ohio State, vs. Penn State, at Iowa, vs. Wisconsin and at Michigan State. Oof.

Three big things to know
1. What can Maryland’s offense do against such a good Michigan defense? West Virginia has a good defense, but it’s tough to envision the Terrapins doing much better against Michigan.
2. Can Michigan keep up the momentum? It’s unlikely the Wolverines can play as well as they did against BYU every week, but this game would be an ideal time to get the downfield passing game going.
3. What happens next for Edsall? This was scheduled as a night game, and it was supposed to be a showcase game, but there could well be a lot of empty seats (or maize and blue) in the stadium, and Maryland might end up being embarrassed on a national stage. Edsall needs something to show he has the program headed in the right direction.
