Hawaii fires coach Norm Chow

Hawaii is 2-7 so far this season.

There is yet another coaching opening in college football as Hawaii has fired head coach Norm Chow, according to the school. Athletic director David Matlin released the following statement:

“I’d like to thank Coach Chow for his dedication to our football program for the past four years,” Matlin said. “Ultimately, we feel this decision is in the best interest of the University and Athletics Department and we need to move in a different direction. Coach Chow should be commended for helping our football program achieve all-time highs in APR scores and graduation rates.”

Chow has been the head coach at Hawaii since the 2012 season. His team is 2-7 this year, and he went 10-36 overall, never winning more than four games in a season. The Warriors are coming off a 58-7 home loss to Air Force. Before his stint at Hawaii, Chow was the offensive coordinator at Utah, UCLA and USC, along with a stop with the Tennessee Titans.

There are many institutional problems at Hawaii that likely affected Chow, not the least of which was former athletic director Ben Jay saying just last year that there was a “very real possibility” the Warriors’ football program would shut down. Recruiting and the inherent costs of playing in Hawaii are both very difficult to overcome. Hawaii hasn’t had a relevant program since it went undefeated in the regular season under coach June Jones and quarterback Colt Brennan in 2007 to earn a berth in the Sugar Bowl.

Not only will Hawaii have to deal with its institutional problems in making its next hire, the Warriors will also have to compete with a number of other programs looking to hire new coaches. This is now the 10th opening in FBS this so far this season.
