Frank Beamer is retiring, and now there are already *10* open head coaching jobs

Good morning! It’s your daily digest of college football stuff.

Two more job openings. There are now 10 head coach job openings in FBS, and it’s only Nov. 2. Both Virginia Tech and Hawaii got added to that list on Sunday, with Frank Beamer announcing his retirement at the end of the season and Norm Chow getting fired by the Warriors.

Who replaces Beamer? Gobbler Country makes the case for a number of different candidates, with Temple’s head coach and an FCS name perhaps the most interesting. One writer recounts a personal story about meeting Beamer.

How good is the Hawaii job? Hawaii is in trouble financially, and things could get worse for the Warriors, but is it the worst job available? Mountain West Connection ranks it ahead of North Texas.

AAC love. Put Memphis and Houston in the top 10, says Spencer Hall. And while Temple missed out on its moment, the Tigers and Cougars have high Playoff hopes.

Controversial play. Check out this step-by-step recap of Miami’s crazy eight lateral kickoff return for a touchdown. The ACC announced that there were four officiating errors on that play, and that the officials would be suspended for two games. Miami doesn’t care. Even though Duke would have won without at least one of those officiating errors, the result of the game won’t be overturned.

Bowl projections. Stanford is in the latest Playoff projections ahead of a big weekend. Iowa now makes an appearance in the New Year’s Six bowls.

Rankings. These are the final AP and Coaches polls before the CFP committee rankings, and Ohio State and Baylor -- both idle this week -- are the consensus top two.

Ahead of schedule. Florida wasn’t supposed to be a contender in the SEC East, but the Gators all but wrapped up the division in October. That’s incredible.

Underrated Irish. Notre Dame has a loss and a ton of injuries, but after beating Temple behind another impressive performance from quarterback DeShone Kizer, don’t count out the Irish.

Who knew? The Georgia Bulldogs’ offense is about as bad as the St. Louis Rams’ after they hired the Rams’ offensive coordinator. Wow, what a surprise.

Texas sorrows. Just when it looked like things were getting better for Texas, the Longhorns had their worst loss in years. Does Charlie Strong need to hire another new offensive coordinator?

Only offense. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech combined for 123 points, as God intended in the points-happy Big 12.

Good dogs. This weekend featured two good college football dogs. Jim Harpaw is a good dog. Texas A&M’s mascot, Reveille, got loose in the Aggies’ pregame ceremony, and is also a good dog.

Another shoe company guy. Could Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost be a candidate to replace Randy Edsall at Maryland? Testudo Times makes the case.

Desert blues. After getting blown out by Washington, things got worse for Arizona, which had a four-star recruit decommit on Sunday.

UCLA got the opposite news, adding four-star receiver Theo Howard.

Big suspension. Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk has been suspended for the remainder of the season for “disciplinary reasons.”
