Just a year ago, this was a huge game. It’s an in-state game, for one, and Arizona State was on the rise, while Arizona was looking to win the Pac-12 South. Both teams were expected to compete for a Pac-12 South title this season, but they’ve both had extremely disappointing seasons.
How to watch Arizona vs. Arizona State on TV or online, plus 3 things to know
Which team can win to salvage a disappointing season?
A year removed from winning its division and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl, Arizona has regressed. The Wildcats weren’t all that impressive in an easy non-conference slate, and they followed that up with blowout losses to UCLA and Stanford to open the season. They beat bottom-feeders Oregon State and Colorado, but lost to Washington State, got blown out 49-3, somehow, to Washington, and lost a close one to USC. A win over Utah got Rich Rodriguez’s team to bowl eligibility, but it’s just a consolation prize in a disappointing season.
Arizona State has arguably been even more disappointing. The Sun Devils ranked 15th nationally to start the season but lost to Texas A&M. They inexplicably won bit at UCLA, but lost three in a row to Utah, Oregon and Washington State — not something a contender can do.
This is still a big game in the state of Arizona, as it always will be, but it had the potential to be a lot bigger nationally than it is right now.

Three big things to know
1. Arizona State still needs to get another win to be safe for bowl eligibility.
2. This is Arizona’s last game of the regular season. Its bye week come after all of the other games on its schedule. That makes no sense and it rightfully makes Rich Rodriguez angry. He’s angry about Pac-12 scheduling in general.
3. The losing coach in this game could have a bit of a warm seat heading into next year. Nothing serious, but they could both really benefit from a win to salvage the season.
