Tom Herman, the country’s hottest coaching prospect, could actually stay at Houston:
Houston athletic director: ‘I expect Tom Herman to be our coach’ in 2016
Good morning! This is the Read Option, your morning roundup of college football stuff.

“Nothing is signed and nothing is final. We’re going to work this week to finalize the deal, and I expect we’ll have it done this weekend after the AAC Championship,” athletic director Hunter Yurachek told SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey. “I expect Tom to be our coach. Something dynamic would have to happen for that not to be the case.”
Your daily coaching rumor update. Let’s get down to business.
- USC took the interim tag off Clay Helton, giving him the full-time gig. Our USC site, Conquest Chronicles, is happy the Trojans appear to have chosen substance over flash this time around. And hey, if nothing else, USC players appear to be pretty enthusiastic about the move. Is it the right call? This roster's so loaded, so I guess we'll find out soon.
- The recently deposed Mark Richt said Monday that he's already heard from about five schools, and he is reportedly already talking with Maryland.
- The Terps' interim coach, Mike Locksley, will also get an interview.
- And speaking of Georgia again, our Georgia blog wants athletic director Greg McGarity fired.
- Utah State head coach Matt Wells will reportedly interview for the Missouri job.
- Former Florida head coach and current Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp might get a look at South Carolina.
- Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash is a "strong candidate" at Syracuse.
- Mack Brown is interested in the Virginia job, but the feeling reportedly isn't quite mutual.
- Butch Jones and Tennessee are reportedly working on an extension.
- TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie will reportedly be staying in Fort Worth rather than leaving for the offensive coordinator job at Texas. His co-coordinator, Doug Meacham, is leaving for North Texas. Burnt Orange Nation is concerned Charlie Strong's lack of job security, be it real or perceived, could negatively impact the caliber of assistants he can hire.
- Houston Nutt is interested in the job. Any job. And in this case, the Tulane job.
As always, you can find a full chronology of all the coaching rumors for every school in the country at our coaching rumor tracker.
Slick. One coaching search is already over, and that's Virginia Tech's. The Hokies pulled the trigger and landed Justin Fuente faster than most anyone could've imagined. It was so quiet that Bud Foster, who's staying on as defensive coordinator, was only informed of Fuente's identity as the new coach when he was on the way to meet him.
We have our first bowl matchup! Western Michigan and Middle Tennessee State will jet off to Nassau for the Bahamas Bowl on Christmas Eve. This should be pretty fun!
Feel the excitement! Since there won’t be enough bowl eligible teams to fill all the bowl slots, the NCAA announced 5-7 teams will be allowed to go, and will be selected based on APR score. That means Nebraska and others are going bowling this year. Missouri would’ve been allowed to, but the Tigers declined to be considered.
Flip? Jacob Eason, the No. 2 quarterback recruit in the 2016 class and current Georgia commit, is taking an official visit at Florida this week. And boy, the Gators could surely use him. Maybe, like, this weekend.
Oh, good lord. Alligator Army chronicles the depths to which Florida’s offense sunk during the month of November. It was truly gruesome.
Big and beautiful. With the regular season (mostly) in the books, we have collected the 63 moments of excellence that are candidates for the Piesman Trophy. It’s been a long year, so go back through and enjoy some of the fun you forgot about.
Amazing. Navy’s helmets for the Army-Navy Game will include hand-painted warships, with each position group having its own ship. These rule.
