The state of Georgia may not want Mark Richt coaching the Bulldogs anymore, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like him.
Some Georgia Republicans want Mark Richt to run for governor
Maybe Georgia’s ex-coach does have a higher calling?

2 GOP sources say Georgia campaign strategists are trying to recruit @MarkRicht to make a run for Ga Governor in 2018. Thoughts?
— Lori Geary (@LoriGearyWSB) December 1, 2015 Greg Bluestein of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote about the idea, noting former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne’s successful run for Congress, as well as a flirtation by Georgia’s Vince Dooley with politics:
Richt remains a popular - and eminently well-known - figure in Georgia who is used to speaking to crowds, navigating the media, dealing with personal attacks and crafting a message. Those close to him says his politics lean toward the right, though he’s largely avoided making political statements.
The Georgia head coach has never hid from his values or his Christian faith, two things that have always made him very popular with Bulldogs fans, even those that were critical of his coaching. Although Bluestein goes on to note that those close to Richt do not see his next job coming in the political realm.
Georgia has offered Richt a chance to stay on in the athletic department, and hey, maybe he could just work as the next head coach’s offensive coordinator? He’s also been linked to head coach openings at Miami, Maryland and Virginia.
