Mount Union will face St. Thomas in 2015 Stagg Bowl, after already beating UW-Whitewater

The two teams that usually meet in the final met in this year’s semifinal.

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Stagg Bowl matchup is set, and once again, it will be No. 1 Mount Union and No. 4 St. Thomas playing for the D-III National Championship, a rematch of the 2012 national title game. Mount Union won that game, 28-10.

In this year’s semifinal, Mount Union smashed No. 5 Wisconsin-Whitewater, its old foe, 36-6. Nine of the past 10 Stagg Bowls have been played between those two teams, with St. Thomas being the lone interloper since 2004. Mount Union can win its 12th national title this year and its first since 2012, having fallen to UW-Whitewater in each of the past two years. The Purple Raiders are 14-0 this year, scoring an average of 53.6 points per game, while giving up 7.5

They’ll take on St. Thomas (Minn.) after the Tommies’ 38-17 win over No. 2 Linfield in their semifinal. St. Thomas might not have the name recognition of Mount Union or UW-Whitewater, but they reached the Stagg Bowl in 2012 and have dominated everyone they’ve played this year. St. Thomas is also 14-0, outscoring opponents by an average score of 52.5-9.9.

The Stagg Bowl will be be Friday, Dec. 18, in Salem, Va., at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU, or online on WatchESPN. Here’s a look at the full bracket, via NCAA.com.
