Jacob Eason, the top-ranked quarterback in the class of 2016, announced he was sticking with his commitment to Georgia instead of flipping to Florida.
Georgia holds off Florida to keep No. 1 QB recruit Jacob Eason
Georgia keeps the No. 1 rated QB recruit.
Eason is the fourth-ranked player overall in the class of 2016, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and he was named the national Gatorade Player of the Year. He committed to Georgia in July 2014 over offers from pretty much everyone in the country. However, he decided to reopen his recruitment after Mark Richt was fired at Georgia. Richt did not encourage Eason to leave even after he was fired. While he never fully decommited from Georgia, and has already signed his grant-in-aid letter, Eason decided to bring Florida back into the mix.
The Gators put on a late blitz to get Eason, even though they had already secured a commitment from 2017 QB Feleipe Franks. Eason officially visited Florida on Dec. 1 and was visited by Florida coach Jim McElwain on Dec. 10, according to 247Sports. He had a visit from new Georgia coach Kirby Smart on Dec. 7 and officially visited Georgia on Dec. 11. He unofficially visited Georgia at least two times before Richt was fired.
Eason, a native of Lake Stevens, Wash., will enroll early and be available for spring practice. He’s as good as his rating suggests.
“Eason has one of the best physical skill sets to come along from the prep ranks in years,” said SB Nation national recruiting director Bud Elliott. “The arm is big, the frame is better and he has enough mobility to make throws while on the move or off balance. He reminds me of a young Drew Bledsoe.”
With his commitment intact, Georgia’s 2016 class remains ranked 11th in the country in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Kirby Smart is off to a strong start as the head coach of UGA.
