Texas A&M starting quarterback Kyler Murray has been granted his release to transfer. The Aggies issued a very brief statement Thursday.
With Kyler Murray transferring, Texas A&M quarterback situation is dire
The Aggies are in a lot of trouble at quarterback.

— Sam Khan Jr. (@skhanjr) December 18, 2015 Murray, a former five-star recruit, was a true freshman this season and started for a portion of the year, along with former-five star sophomore Kyle Allen, who announced less than a week ago that he would be transferring from the program.
Losing two young five-star quarterbacks in the same week would be very bad, but that’s not even the beginning. The Aggies have been awesome at recruiting top-rated quarterbacks under coach Kevin Sumlin, but have also been awful at keeping them. Here’s every four-or-five-star Texas A&M quarterback recruit since Sumlin arrived in 2012:
| Name | Year | Stars | Where are they now? |
| Matt Davis | 2012 | 4 | Transferred (SMU) |
| Kenny Hill | 2013 | 4 | Transferred (TCU) |
| Kohl Stewart | 2013 | 4 | Signed with Minnesota Twins |
| Kyle Allen | 2014 | 5 | Transferred |
| Kyler Murray | 2015 | 5 | Transferring |
Without Murray, the Aggies only have one quarterback in the program who arrived at A&M with a scholarship: JUCO transfer Jake Hubenak. They don’t have any quarterbacks committed in the 2016 class, either, so without Murray, it would be up to Hubenak, plus four others who walked on. Adding to the uncertainty, it is unclear whether offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, who was roundly criticized by fans, will be back next season.
After leading the best offense in the country in 2012 and one of the best in 2013, with the help of Johnny Manziel, Sumlin looks to be in serious trouble. 2016 was already a make-or-break year for Sumlin, and now, the Aggies look to be in even more trouble than before.
