Bad pass interference call helps Oklahoma start the Orange Bowl with a touchdown

Baker Mayfield’s pass landed three yards out of bounds, but Clemson got called for a 15-yard penalty regardless.

ESPN broadcast

No. 4 Oklahoma took an early lead in the 2015 Orange Bowl by driving 75 yards on their first possession. However, the most important play of that drive may have been a pass that Baker Mayfield threw out of bounds.

No. 1 Clemson defensive back Ryan Carter earned a pass interference call on this potentially uncatchable second-and-9 pass. That moved the Sooners from a third-and-long at their own 46 to a fresh set of downs at the Clemson 39-yard line. Samaje Perine dove into the end zone six plays later to give Oklahoma a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.
