North Texas reportedly hiring North Carolina OC Seth Littrell as head coach

The Mean Green went with a young offensive mind to try to rebuild the program.

North Texas has reportedly filled its coaching vacancy, tapping North Carolina assistant head coach for offense Seth Littrell, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. Littrell replaces Dan McCarney, who was fired back in October after going 22-32 during his time in Denton.

The choice was reportedly down to Littrell and TCU co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. At one point at the end of November, Meacham was reported to be the pick for the job, but Meacham pulled his name from consideration shortly thereafter.

Littrell has a history of coaching explosive spread offenses. His current team, North Carolina, has evolved into one of the best offenses in the country this year. The Tar Heels were second in the nation at 7.46 yards per play this year, only 0.01 yards behind Baylor, and put up more than 41 points per game. Before coming to UNC, Littrell served as offensive coordinator at Indiana and Arizona, both of which scored a lot of points during his time there. He was also an assistant on Mike Leach’s staff at Texas Tech for four years.

He’ll have a challenge on his hands at North Texas, though. The last coach to leave Denton with a winning record was Hayden Fry in the mid-1970s, and the 1-11 Mean Green finished 127th in the F/+ rankings this year. It’s going to be a big rebuild, but the abundance of Texas high school talent that plays in some form of spread offense could help fuel the turnaround.
